About Me

In December 1988, Vladimir Kryuchkov celebrated his inaugural New Year as head of the KGB with an atypical display of levity by hosting his subordinate officers from the Second and Fifth Directorates for an evening of open mic stand-up. Acting as master of ceremonies, he instructed the audience to feel free to laugh at anything they felt was a joke, and take note of everything their comrades laughed at.

Hynescorp Solutions Ltd is just like this story: not real, but too true. It's the personal site of Mike Hynes, a data software developer with a bad sense of humour: most consultants are real companies that do fake work, but Hynescorp is a fake company that does real work.

Current Work

Currently I'm a Staff Engineer at Shopify, supporting the People Analytics group as a technical lead. I work in the intersection of several areas:

• Data Warehousing and Data Engineering
• Big Data, ETL/ELT processing, and system data integrations
• Data Modelling in OLAP and OLTP systems
• Numerical optimization, mathematical modelling, and machine learning
• Cloud infrastructure, software development, and CI/CD

I'm available for consulting in the areas above, particularly for advising organizations that are scaling up and need help building a Data Warehouse and Data Science stack, but don't have expertise in-house. Feel free to contact me if you'd like some advice.
